Preparative Chemistry

The Merck Frosst Centre for Therapeutic Research has state-of-the-art preparative laboratories for the preparation of new drug candidates. The process chemists can run chemistry from -70°C to +140°C, and reactions up to 70L scale, with work-up volumes of up to 140L. This allows preparation of materials on a 1 to 5 Kg scale.

Material produced in the preparative laboratories will be used by other Merck departments to conduct safety testing and early clinical trials. As the drug moves from research and development to marketing, the process chemists ensure the successful transfer of technology at each stage.

The final process must be reproducible in terms of yield on repetitive runs and on scale-up, and must be able to deliver a final drug of consistently high quality. To meet these criteria the process undergoes a continual evolution, from discovery and development, through the pilot plant, to final production.
